The iPhone (News - Alert) 4S, which was finally being made public in Beijing yesterday, ran into some trouble when the store’s release didn’t go as planned. Just like here in the United States, hundreds of Apple (News
- Alert) enthusiasts stood outside and waited in line for their chance to get their hands on the brand new phone.
Customers began lining up the night before and braved the cold weather to be first in line at Beijing’s main Apple Store in Sanlitun. Apple advertised that they would be opening their doors to customers beginning at 7 a.m.
However, as more and more people got restless waiting in line for the store to open people began taking action. A group from the crowd began fighting outside the store, causing police to arrive to try and help calm the situation.
Apple decided to delay their store opening, probably in hopes that the crowds would calm down. About 15 minutes later, an employee from the Apple store made an announcement that the store would no longer be releasing the iPhone 4S to customers at this time.
Customers, who were already riled up, began screaming and a riot broke out. Somehow eggs were given out to some of the customers, who proceeded to egg the entire front side of the building, which is made up of nice glass panels.
“This is a debacle,” Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, a Shanghai-based retail advertising company, who spoke with SFGate in a phone interview. “Everybody knows there will be massive numbers of people when Apple has this kind of launch. This shows very poor retail management ability.”
After the incident, Apple confirmed that the sales of the iPhone 4S would be delayed at all retail stores in both Beijing and Shanghai. “The demand for the iPhone 4S has been incredible, and our stores in China have already sold out,” said an Apple spokesperson. “Unfortunately we were unable to open our store at Sanlitun due to the large crowd, and to ensure the safety of our customers and employees, iPhone4S will not be available in our retail stores in Beijing and Shanghai for the time being. Customers can still order iPhone 4S though the Apple Online Store, or buy at China Unicom (News
- Alert) and authorized resellers.”
