Siri Now Available on Jailbroken iPhone 4

Siri, Apple’s (News - Alert) much sought-after personal assistant, can now be accessed by jailbroken iPhones using a hacking application called Spire, according to a hacker known as “chpwn,” who posted the details of the program on his blog.

The tool, Spire, will download Siri itself (directly from Apple) when it installs. However, before users begin downloading, they should know that getting the hack itself is just the beginning. There are many more steps beyond getting Spire in order to actually use Siri on an older iOS 5 devices, and even then users put themselves at risk for getting hacked by others.

The Spire hack said his download would allow users to get Siri from Apple’s server onto older versions of the iPhone (News - Alert), eliminating the one major difference between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

“[Spire is] a new tool for installing Siri on previously unsupported, but jailbroken, devices,” said Chpwn (real name Grant Paul), who, along with Ryan Petrich and Steven Troughton-Smith, unveiled Spire earlier this week.

However, Apple still required authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy servers’ address. “Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts,” said Chpwn. “Similarly, rather than directing all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server.”

The 100MB download (Chpwn recommends using WiFi (News - Alert) to help it along) will add Siri to any device running iOS 5. That means any jailbroken iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, third and fourth generation iPod touch and first generation iPad can all use the Spire program.

In the meantime, Google (News - Alert) is reportedly developing a natural language processing enhancement to its Voice Actions application that is codenamed “Majel.” Google is hoping this will rival Apple’s Siri program. The company has offered Google Voice Search on the iPhone and it’s Android (News - Alert) device since 2008, and that application alone has been expanded to cover numerous languages and more than 37 countries accents, including the Middle East.
