Before Hurricane Sandy made landfall and directly after it passed over the East Coast, there was quite a bit of talk about how a company could prepare itself for a disaster. Once cleanup began there was quite a bit of talk about how people should have been prepared for the disaster. Now the conversation has changed to what can people do for those who were caught in the brunt of this natural disaster. Not surprisingly, quite a few of the people donating are actually using social applications in order to get their donations to victims.
One of these applications is known as Budge for the iPhone (News - Alert) and was released just this past week. The social donation app makes giving money a little more fun, by allowing users to challenge each other to various games. The loser of the game then donates $1, $2 or $5 to one of the charities supported by the application.

"For us it's really about changing the way people think about donating," said Hillan Klein, co-founder and CEO of New York-based company Budge. "We are driving to change the culture and say you can have fun while you do good."
According to the developers of the application, people are usually donating as much as $25, $40 or $50 a month. The application can be set to divide those donations over any of the 11 charities that are currently supported by Budge. Charities that are benefitting the victims of Hurricane Sandy are just a few charities that Budge lists.
More and more applications that allow people to donate through new and interesting ways are popping up recently. It seems that the rise of more high tech ways to give money has also given rise to an understanding that people will be more likely to donate if the methods are a little more interesting than talking to a telemarketer at the other end of a phone line.
