Cricket Ready with iPhone 5 Prepaid Starting September 28

With the announcement of the iPhone (News - Alert) 5 now a part of history, it's only a small surprise to see that Cricket was ready with its own announcement not too long after. Cricket announced that it would have the iPhone 5 available, and on its prepaid plans, starting September 28.

Cricket, a subsidiary of Leap Wireless (News - Alert), focuses on prepaid plans for those who want some of the newer phones, yet aren't interested in a big two-year commitment like the kind generally required by larger mobile providers. Cricket has previously sold the iPhone 4, as well as the iPhone 4S, starting back in June, offering the device with $55 a month unlimited plans, and that has spurred speculation about the exact pricing details involved in Cricket's latest plan.

Currently, it's been suggested that the iPhone 5 will sell at its full retail price--said to be $649--and will from there be used with Cricket's more recent unlimited plans ranging from $50 to $70 per month. At those rates, however, the number of takers may be comparatively slim.

Cricket itself, meanwhile, has been somewhat mum on the actual plan's details, including just which markets will comprise the "select Cricket markets" in which Cricket plans to make the device available, or if there will be any stipulations in terms of use on the devices.

While the lack of concrete details out of Cricket about its plans in terms of the iPhone 5 makes it a bit difficult to speculate about its full value, it is worth noting that this is a different option, one that poses more than a little potential to shake up the market. Cricket may have to do a bit of subsidizing on its own to make this a fuller bargain, but offering an unlimited plan with what is sure to be a hotly popular new device will likely be received very well by certain parts of the mobile device market. Indeed, some who will want an iPhone 5 close to launch day, yet be unable to find it at their provider of choice due to the shortages that will almost certainly occur around launch day, may well choose to get their hands on it with a prepaid strategy.

How many will go that route remains to be seen, but it's a possibility, and a possibility that poses a few others from there that might just shake the market up a bit.
