BRIEF: Enloe High School teacher named Wake County Teacher of the Year

CARY, May 18, 2012 (The News & Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Enloe High School's Lauren Brooks was named the Wake County school system's 2012 Teacher of the Year at a ceremony on Thursday.

Brooks is in her fourth year of teaching Algebra at Enloe, a magnet school in East Raleigh. She teaches Honors Algebra students and also leads an Algebra remediation team to help students who are struggling.

"I teach because I love to see students learn," Brooks said in a written statement. "I love having that light bulb moment with students where they just get it. It just opens a whole new world of understanding for them that they never had before." Brooks also serves on Enloe's school improvement team, the Algebra professional learning team and the Positive Behavior Intervention Team. She's also the coach of the varsity girls' volleyball team.

Her prizes include a $1,000 check, an engraved acrylic award, a digital camera and various classroom and office supplies. Brooks will now compete in the statewide teacher of the year program.

Brooks was one of 12 school district finalists. Each school nominates a teacher, with selection committees whittling down the list to pick one winner.
