Bail bondsman charged in string of motel burglaries

KISSIMMEE, Apr 13, 2012 (The Orlando Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A bail bondsman along with a veteran burglar have been charged with breaking into motels in Osceola, Orlando and across the state, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

Ricky Lee Collins, a state-licensed bail bond agent, and Clinton Joe McCarthren, were arrested yesterday following an investigation that began last year by detectives from Osceola and Orange counties, said Osceola County Sheriff's spokeswoman Twis Lizasuain.

When detectives searched the home of Collins, 46, on 22nd Street in Orlando they recovered 31 laptop computers, more than 10 digital cameras as well as cell phone, luggage and jewelry believed stolen in a series of burglaries, Lizasuain said.

Alexis Lambert of the state Department of Financial Services said Collins is not currently authorized to issue bail bonds. When a bail bond agent is arrested, it is state policy to suspend his or her license pending the outcome of criminal charges, she said.

Collins and McCarthren, a veteran burglar who has served four prison sentences, are suspects in an undisclosed number of burglaries at motels on International Drive as well as Cocoa Beach, Daytona Beach and Jacksonville. The investigation continues and more charges are pending, according to Lizasuain.

Collins remains held in lieu of $200,000 bail in the Osceola County Jail on charges of criminal conspiracy, burglary and grand theft. McCarthren, 59, of Orlando, remains held in lieu of $34,000 bail in the Osceola County Jail on charges of grand theft, unoccupied burglary and criminal mischief.
