Sutter County flood DVD now on sale

Sep 08, 2010 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- After months on television and the Internet, a documentary on the 1955 Sutter County flood is available on DVD.

Officials for the county and the Community Memorial Museum on Tuesday announced plans to sell DVD copies of "The 1955 Sutter County Flood," the fullest video account of the Dec. 24, 1955 levee failure that inundated the Yuba City area and killed 38 people. Sales began today at the museum, according to county spokesman Chuck Smith, who produced the piece.

Sutter County filmed interviews with more than 60 survivors, then aired early versions of the program at local flood protection fairs and on the Comcast cable TV system from February to April. The completed 80-minute documentary became available online in May.

The flood documentary's DVD release became possible with the Board of Supervisors' approval Tuesday night of a maximum $4.85 fee for documents and programs the county administrator's office releases on DVD or compact disc. The county museum will charge $2.65 per video, according to Smith, who said about 500 copies of the disc have been created.

Though many witnesses to the flood have died over the decades, enough have survived -- and passed their stories to their relatives -- to keep up interest in the disaster, according to museum curator Julie Stark.

"Oh my goodness, our phone's rung off hook for six months because of it," she said. "We've had a waiting list for people wanting to purchase it.

"Not everyone is able to use (online) methods, and a lot of people want to send (DVDs) to other family members. We think it'll be a nice thing to aid in educating people about the history (of the flood)." Sutter County's documentary is one of two recent projects to revive memories of the 1955 flood in order to build support for flood-safety improvements, including a $250 million upgrade of Feather River levees property owners approved in June.

In December, the Sutter County Flood Control Agency released online and iTunes versions of the 1956 radio series "What About the Flood?", featuring interviews KUBA-AM conducted with survivors in the first months after the disaster.
